Image Portugal has only one navigable inland waterway, namely the River Douro running some 210km to the Spanish Border – it’s a very attractive canalised river with some spectacular views and very little commercial traffic.

Despite the Douro being the only navigable inland waterway Portugal does boast one of the very largest lakes in Europe, the Grande Lago, which is becoming an increasingly popular cruising ground. It’s a nature lovers paradise, has a interesting heritage, and it’s possible to moor overnight at one of the islands, and to visit the historic lakeside villages.
There is now a cruiser hire operator based on the Grande Lago at the marina at Amiera Marina.
